Abstract

1,095,622. Evaporation of solutions; production of crystals. J. M. MALEK. March 16, 1965 [March 16, 1964; Sept. 28, 1964], No. 11158/65. Heading B1B. Crystals are produced from solutions of crystalline materials by feeding the superheated solution through inlets 55 into a column where flash vaporization of part of the solvent takes 'place and a mixture of solution and bubbles of vapour rises through cylindrical plates 50, which prevent the coalescence of the bubbles, to a vapour-separating chamber from which the vapour is withdrawn through outlet 57. The solution then flows down the central tube 47 into chamber 53 where a fluidized bed of crystals is formed. The solution, with smaller crystals in suspension, recirculates up the evaporator column 46. Larger crystals sink to wards outlet 54, from which they can be removed. The apparatus is kept filled with solution up to level 58. Mother-liquor is discharged through outlet 56. A heater may be provided for the column below plates 50 at such a level that vaporization of the liquid at the heating surface is prevented by the hydrostatic pressure due to the head of liquid. Air or gas, saturated with the vapour of the solution being treated, may be bubbled into the solution as it rises in the column. In a mixer for powdered plastics material and a solvent the powder is fed into a shoot 9, Fig. 1, and lumps are first crushed by blades 10, 28 carried on a rotatable shaft 2 and interdigitating with fixed blades 11. The powder then passes through a series of treatment chambers as 13, 14, 15, 16 formed by conical annular baffles as at 25 attached to the shaft and like fixed baffles 24 in the housing, each chamber having a liquid injection nozzle 17, 29, 30. The shaft also carries blades 12, 26; all the blades are inclined to urge the material downwards so that it follows a labyrinthine path in which it is alternately forcibly conveyed by the blades and arrested by the baffles. In a modification (Fig. 2 not shown) the shaft may carry discs (19) between which are scraper blades (20) freely pivotable about axes parallel to the shaft; or a drum (22) having studs (23) distributed helically over its curved surface.
