Abstract

109,509. Guns & Munitions, Ltd., and Doubleday, V. C. Oct. 7, 1916 Ordnance pneumatic; projectile fuses, devices on gun for firing; design.-The Specification describes devices provided on or in the barrel of a gun or the like, whereby a casing surrounding u grenade is detached from the projectile on discharge, so that the fuse-controlling lever is released. According to the invention, the grenade is, before insertion in the gun, placed in the casing, which is open at one end and fits the gun-barrel. On discharging the casing containing the grenade from the gun, the casing is stopped at the muzzle whilst the projectile passes on, and the lever, which has been retained at " safe " by the casing, is then free. To stop the casing and detach it from the grenade, an extension a, having a cntaway portion c provided with a flange d, may be detachably secured to the muzzle. The part a may be perforated at e. Instead of being a separate attachment, the part a may be integral with the gun-muzzle b. In a modification, the device for stopping the casing consists of converging longitudinal strips projecting from the muzzle. Another means for separating the casing from the grenade comprises steel balls or the like, resiliently mounted in recesses in the gun-barrel, and adapted to retard the casing as it passes out. Specification 9794/15 is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of the invention with a pneumatic gun.
