Abstract
1,095,003. Filtering. U. PASSAVANT and P. SCHRAMM, [trading as PASSAVANTWERKE], Feb. 19, 1965 [Feb. 19, 1964], No. 7336/65. Heading B1D. Prior to using a filter press 1 for dewatering a mixture of sewage sludge and ash, a layer of filter aid is applied to the press by entraining the filter aid in a stream of suspending liquid. The filter aid may be ash, and the liquid may be filtrate from the press 1. In the apparatus shown, ash is metered from hopper 14 into mixing vessel 4 while air is passed through the vessel from inlet 11 to outlet 13 to blow the finer ash away. Liquid is subsequently introduced into the vessel 4 from a source 10, which may be a high reservoir, a container with compressed air supply or a pump. The liquid enters tangentially at two levels, producing turbulence, and carries the ash into press 1 through pipe 3. The liquid used is at least twice the volume of the press, and 0.2 to 0.8 Kg./m<SP>2</SP> of ash are deposited on the press filtering surfaces. In an alternative embodiment, the filter aid is fed by a screw directly into a pipe carrying the suspending liquid.
