Abstract
Cobalt salts of an aliphatic mono-carboxylic acid (2-4 C) are regenerated from a mixture comprising the salts, as spent catalysts, and an aqueous solution of a free aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (2-4 C) by heating to from 50 DEG to 300 DEG C., cooling, separating the solids, at least 2 mols. of the free acid and at least 4 mols. of water being present in the mixture per gram atom of cobalt, and the concentration of free acid in the mixture being no more than 80 mol. per cent. The spent catalysts may be present in a mixture resulting from the oxidation of hydrocarbons and/or their oxidized derivatives for example toluene, m- and p-xylene, p-cymene, cyclohexane, m- and p-tolualdehyde, m -and p-toluic acid, methyl m- and p-toluylate, cyclohexanol, and cyclohexanone. Examples describe the preparation of cobaltous acetate, propionate, and butyrate from mother liquors obtained by the oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid, toluene to benzoic acid, cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol to adipic acid, m-xylene to isophthalic acid, p-tolualdehyde to terephthalic acid.
