Abstract

A resin precondensate is obtained by the partial transesterification of an organic silicate with at least one organic polyhydroxy compound (either or both of the silicate and polyhydroxy compound containing aromatic groups) in the presence of a base and formaldehyde or a precursor thereof. The reaction is usually carried out until the reaction mixture begins to gel or, where a solvent is used, until the reaction product begins to precipitate out from the solvent. Further formaldehyde is added to the precondensate, unless sufficient residual formaldehyde is present therein, to effect final cure of the product. In Examples, bisphenol A and/or hydroquinone was reacted with phenyl- or ethyl-ortho-silicate and hexamine. The product of Example (2) was a brittle foam. Uses.-As laminating, moulding or coating compositions.
