Abstract
109,391. Candlot, C. Feb. 27, 1917. Lime.-The slaking of lime and of cements containing lime, without hydrating the aluminates and silicates contained therein is effected by sprinkling water on successive films of material fed into a hopper mounted on a vertical rotary shaft and provided with sprinkler nozzles arranged along a radius. The apparatus comprises a vertical rotary hopper 1 attached to but movable vertically along a shaft 2 which carries a base-plate 5 having a footstep bearing 6 on a rod 7 which is suspended by links 10, 11 resting through spiral springs 12 on supports 16, 17. The rod, 7 also carries a rod 8 in a bearing 9. The hopper 1 is driven by the gear 3 and shaft 2 and receives lime from a shoot 21 and water from a pipe 22. The supply of lime and water is controlled by means of the motion of the rod 11 under the action of the varying weight of the lime on the base-plate 5. If the lime feed slackens or stops, the weight becomes reduced owing to the action of scoops 18 carried by bell-crank levers 19 pivoted at 20 and jointed to the rods 10, 11, the scoops continually discharging the treated material as at 25. The springs 12 therefore raise the rods 10, 11 thereby moving the scoops 18 outwardly so that they discharge at a smaller rate, and if a sufficient loss of weight has occurred, the water supply is interrupted by an extension of the rod 11 tilting a funnel 27 through which the supply tank 26 is filled, so that the water flows into the right hand compartment of the tank 26 which has an outlet to a waste well. The supply of water is resumed when the weight of the material on the plate 5 is sufficient to depress the rods 10, 11 far enough to tilt the funnel 27 into the position shown in dotted lines. A slaking apparatus 32 constructed as above described may be arranged over a pit 33, lime being supplied at 34 and withdrawn from the pit at 35, Fig. 3, or the slaking apparatus may be mounted on wheels so as to serve several pits 36, 37, 38, Fig. 4, in succession.
