Abstract

109,381. Wedge, U. Jan. 24, 1917. Roasting and calcining furnaces.-In an annular metallurgical furnace or like structure having inner and outer walls 1, 2, and an interposed annular structure 6, either the main structure or the interposed structure being capable of rotation, hearths 4 are arranged to project inwardly from the outer wall and outwardly from the inner wall, while other hearths 5 project in both directions from the interposed structure, the two sets overlapping as shown. The moving structure is supported on radiating arms 7 projecting from a central shaft 8 and carries the draught outlet or outlets 25, which may extend inwardly to a central chimney. Burners 21, 22 are carried by either or both of the hearth-carrying structures as shown in Fig. 4, so as to project their flames through gaps in the hearths of their own' structure on to the hearths of the other structure. The furnace mav however be heated by solid fuel. Both structures may be made in sections with expansion joints between them, and the hearths may be in sections with overlapping joints. Rabbles 15 may be suspended from the rotating hearths as shown in Fig. 6. In a modification, the inner wall of the main structure and the inner sets of hearths are omitted, and the revolving structure runs on wheels at its base. Some or all of the hearths may be hollow. The hearths may be supported by a sort of cantilever structure comprising blocks embedded in the walls.
