Abstract

1,093,751. Irradiation apparatus. AQUATRON CORPORATION (AUST.) PTY. Ltd. Feb. 25, 1965 [Feb. 26, 1964; March 18, 1964], No. 8192/65. Heading H5R. The invention relates to a method of sterilizing bottles and the liquid with which they are filled, using ultra-violet radiation. Bottles 2 of ultraviolet (U.V.) transparent material, e.g. polyethylene, are fed one at a time from a hopper 1 on to a conveyer 3 which carries them into an irradiation chamber 5, in which they are subjected to U.V. radiation from tubes 6 and also tipped open end up by conveyer parts 7. An U.V. transparent bulk container 9 is irradiated by means of elongated tubes 13 focused on the axial centre and liquid passing through a tube 10 from container 9 to the filling device 11, is also irradiated. After filling, the bottles are passed to capping apparatus 17, the store shoot of U.V. transparent caps above this, being irradiated by U.V. lamps 19. The filling and the capping stations are enclosed by radiation shields 12, 20. The bottles are then checked by photo-electric apparatus 22, 23 to determine their transparency and thus whether or not the liquid contained can have received the required irradiation to reach a particular sterility value
