Abstract

Monovalent or polyvalent carboxylic acid esters are obtained by reacting a carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid anhydride with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst, characterized in that monohydric or polyhydric alcohols having a higher boiling-point than water are used and that the pressure in the reaction vessel is reduced continuously or in stages during the course of the reaction. An excess of the alcohol reactant, e.g. 4-7% by wt., may be employed and the catalyst used may be sulphuric acid and an entraining agent may be present. The vacuum applied at the beginning of the reaction is generally between 500 and 200 Torr and as the reaction progresses the temperature is raised by about 2-10 DEG C. per 5 minutes and in the same period the pressure is reduced by about 10-150 Torr, suitably down to a vacuum of about 100 Torr. In examples isononyl stearate, diisononyl phthalate and ethylene glycol distearate are prepared.
