Abstract
1,093,089. Clutch combination and control. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. Oct. 1, 1965 [Oct. 1, 1964], No. 41817/65. Addition to 1,019,800. Headings F2C and F2L. Relates to a vehicle torque transmission device of the parent Specification, wherein an hydrodynamic torque converter 34, comprising an impeller 36 fast with a bell casing 25 drivingly connected to an input, engine-driven, shaft 10, a turbine 39, and a reactor 42 reacting on a fixed support sleeve 16 through a one-way detent 43, is followed in series by a separating friction clutch 35 comprising driving support and spring-urged presser plates 44, 45 rotatable with the turbine 39 and a driven plate 47 splined on an output shaft 11 fast with a vehicle wheel drive pinion 12, the input shaft 10, the output shaft 11 and the sleeve 16 being concentrically nested. In such a device, the input shaft 10 has secured thereto by a taper fitting 23 and screw and lock-washer 24, 24a, a coupling element 21 which protrudes from the output shaft 11, has a spigot 30 on which the bellcasing 25 is centred, and is drivingly connected to the bell casing by a flexible diaphragm 26 disposed in the same transverse plane as the spigot 30, riveted at 27 to the element 21 and bolted at 28 to a ring 29 welded to the bell casing. The spigot 30, provided with a seal 31, engages a flange 32 of the bell casing, such engagement allowing slight relative angular displacement between the latter and the coupling element 21. The bell casing has a starter ring gear, and the coupling element 21 has integral therewith a pulley 22 driving a fan. dynamo or, if not directly driven, a clutch feed pump 66. In operation, with a gear shift lever 63 released, to open a switch 64, and a switch 65 open, a de-energised electromagnetic valve 62 directs pressure oil from the pump 66 through a line 59, a space 14 between the shafts 10, 11, and passages 60 along the right hand inside of the bell casing, to a chamber 52, for friction clutch engagement, a line 61 being vented. When the gear shift lever is operated, to close the switch 64, or when the gear is in Neutral and the switch 65 is closed, the valve 62 is energized and directs pressure oil through the line 61 and a space 18 between the shaft 11 and the sleeve 16 to a chamber 54, for friction clutch disengagement, the line 59 being vented. The chamber 54 is connected to an outer chamber 53 by a passage 56 which is formed in the friction facings 48 of the driven plate and has a pressure loss greater in the direction 53-54 than in the direction 54-53 for slow progressive engagement and rapid disengagement of the friction clutch. The torque converter working circuit is connected to the chamber 52 by an impeller-turbine gap 55 and to the chamber 54 by a turbine-reactor gap 57 and a non-return valve 58.
