Abstract

1,019,800. Clutch combination and control. FRANCAISE DU FERODO S.A. Jan. 9, 1964 [Jan. 10, 1963], No. 1078/64. Headings F2C and F2L. In a torque transmission device particularly for use with transversely mounted engines in vehicles, wherein an hydrodynamic torque converter 38 comprising an impeller 40, a turbine 43 and a reactor 47 (or two reactors) reacting on a fixed support sleeve 18 through a one-way detent 43 is followed in series by a separating friction plate clutch 39 comprising driver presser and support plates 50, 49 rotatable with the turbine 43 and multi or a single driven plate 52, the fixed support sleeve 18, an output shaft 11 fast with a vehicle transmission drive pinion 12, and an input enginedriven shaft 10 are concentrically nested and arranged to receive the converter and clutch pre-assembled as a unit, the one-way detent 48 engaging the fixed support sleeve 18, the friction clutch driven plate 52 engaging, by splines 54, an end of the shaft 11 protruding from the fixed support sleeve 18, and a bell casing 35 having fixed thereto the impeller 40 engaging a tapered end of the shaft 10 protruding from the shaft 11 and being secured to the shaft 10 by a nut or, as shown, a screw 32 and washer 34. As shown, the bell casing 35 has cast therewith a fan-belt pulley 36, a starter ring gear 37 and a rotor 26 of a gear pump 24 separate from the engine lubricating pump. The presser plate 50 is constantly urged to engage the driven plate 52 by a spring washer 51. The plate 52 is provided with friction linings 53. In operation, with the gear shift lever 70 released to open a switch 71 and a switch 72 open, a deenergized electromagnetic valve 68 directs pressure oil from the pump 24 through lines 64, 66, a space 65 between the impeller and the reactor, the converter, and a space 60 between the impeller and the turbine to a chamber 57 to engage the friction clutch 39, a line 67 being vented to a sump 73. When the gear lever is operated to close the switch 71 or when the gear is in neutral to close the switch 72, the valve 68 is energized to direct pressure oil through the line 67 and an intershaft space 20 to chambers 59, 58 to disengage the friction clutch 39, the line 64 being vented. The fluid system includes a spring-loaded relief valve 100, and a conduit 28 collecting discharge from seals 17, 22, 27. A passage 61, in the plate 52, between the chambers 58, 59 has a pressure loss greater in the direction 58-59 than in 59-58 for slow progressive engagement and rapid disengagement of the friction clutch. Calibrated openings 62 in the presser plate 50 are provided with one-way valves 63. In Fig. 4 (not shown) communication with the chamber 59 is through a space between the turbine and the reactor and end openings and one-way valves provided in the support plate 49; and the conduit 64 feeds the converter and the chamber 57 through an intershaft space 14 and channels along the right-hand inside of the bell casing. In Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) the converter and clutch feed pump, though separate from the engine lubrication pump, is independent of the converter. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) the engine lubrication pump provides the converter and clutch feed thereby dispensing with the seals 17, 22; the pinion 12 is splined on the shaft 11 to enable removal of the latter; the bell casing 35 is splined on the shaft 10; and the electromagnetic valve is replaced by a pressure-loaded slide valve centred in the shaft 10.
