Abstract

1,093,016. Liquid filtering apparatus. G. ZWICKY. Aug. 16, 1966, No. 36531/66. Heading B1D. [Also in Division F2] The lower end of cylindrical filter 2 has a funnel 2b leading into a solids collecting tank 6, an inlet 11 opens into filter 2 and a filtrate reservoir with outlet 12 encloses filter 2 and tank 6, whereby solids fall from filter 2 into tank 6 and can be removed, after closing valve 8, without interrupting filtration. The filter removes metal from machine-tool coolant. In Fig. 1, tank 6 is accessible through a door in casing 10 and is decoupled at 7, after closing valve 8 in response to accoustic or visual signal produce as metal reaches magnetic pulse generator 9, and changed or emptied. A rotor 50-62 operated by a feed-liquid turbine 61 carries nylon brushes or rubber scrapers to clean the filter interior. The filter may be sintered bronze, granular material packed between concentric sieves or a paper element 13 supported by a sieve wall 2a and clamped therein by annular spring 14. Filter 2 and funnel 2b are removable together. In Fig. 2 (not shown) inlet (11a) enters a frusto-conical filter tangentially, to aid separation and filter cleaning, and tank (6') is fixed and has a lower outlet valve (20) as well as its upper inlet valve (22) from the filter. Valve (22) is normally held open by an immersed electromagnet (23), which is de-energised when metal reaches probe (27) to close valve (22). Additional valve (30) by-passes valve (22) so that pressures thereacross may be equalised before opening valve (22). Mechanical or electric interlocks may connect valves (20, 22, 30) to prevent more than one being open at once. Tank (6') has a drain outlet (34), covered by a sieve, whereby liquid is returned to dirty liquid reservoir (31) before opening valve (20). Compressed air may enter tank (6') at the top to sweep solids through valve (20). A pump may be located between reservoir (31) and the filter or on the downstream side of filtrate reservoir (1b#). Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a double valve replacing valves (22, 30), in which a manually or mechanically rotated cam (43a) lifts firstly a small central valve (44) then the main annular valve (22').
