Abstract
109,298. Pintsch Akt.-Ges., J. Sept. 5, 1916. Addition to 16620/14. Wire.-Relates to the process described in the parent Specification for obtaining a rod, wire, &c. of tungsten or other metal in the form of a single crystal throughout its length, and consists in controlling the temperature of the wire on its way to the heating zone, by allowing part of the heat from the heating zone to radiate upon, or passing a current through, a part of the wire which is on its way to the heating zone. The cooling of the body after passing the heating zone may also be regulated. The treated wires may be subjected to drawing or other mechanical operations, and two or more wires may be passed through the heating-apparatus eimultaneously. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the wire d is passed through a heating coil S mounted in a spherical chamber n to which are connected a jacketed tube m, and a preferably adjustable tube m<1>. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the wire is passed through chambers G<1>, G<2> and is heated by current supplied by means of mercury contacts I, II, III, which are preferably cooled by air jets; or a number of contacts may be adjustably mounted in a single chamber.
