Abstract
1,092,790. Friction clutches. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Nov. 9, 1966 [Nov. 17, 1965], No. 50217/66. Addition to 1,091,054. Heading F2C. In the spring-released hydraulically actuated friction clutch disposed within a hollow gear rim 1 described in Specification 1,091,054 comprising a pair of V-grooved axially slidable discs, splined to a shaft, hydraulically moved apart into engagement with corresponding V-grooved plates secured each side of the gear rim, in which the co-operating clutch discs and plates are of materials having the same coefficients of thermal expansion and one or both plates of each pair having a metallic surface coating, the metallic coating has non-metallic particles embedded therein influencing the frictional behaviour. Finely divided silicon carbide embedded in the metallic surface coating provides a high coefficient of friction, and the addition of quartz powder in the coating additionally maintains the coefficient of friction at very high temperatures whilst the addition of aluminium silicates also increases the friction coefficient without substantially increasing abrasion of the surface coating. In addition to the friction increasing substances above and others such as asbestos fibres, lubricating substances such as graphite and molybdenum disulphide may be added, the coatings being sintered, cast or sprayed on the clutch members.
