Abstract
Sulphonic acids of aromatic polymers are prepared by mixing together a solution of sulphur trioxide in sulpholane (tetrahydrothiophen-1,1-dioxide) and a solution of an aromatic polymer, e.g. polystyrene, in carbon tetrachloride. The above two solutions may be added to additional carbon tetrachloride or to a mixture of carbon tetrachloride with sulpholane. Water may be added to the mixed solutions so as to separate them into two layers, the carbon tetrachloride layer being run off, the aqueous layer extracted with benzene and then freed from sulphonic acid by passage down a column of ion exchange resin of the quaternary ammonium type in hydroxyl form and the polystyrene sulphonic acid may be recovered from the aqueous solution by evaporation in a rotary film evaporator. Alternatively, after addition of water and separation of the mixed solutions into two layers, the aqueous layer may be separated, dialysed against distilled water and freezedried to yield the polystyrene sulphonic acid.
