Abstract

1,092,607. Photo-sensitive materials. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 18, 1965 [March 21, 1964], No.11532/65. Heading G2C. A photo-sensitive material is produced by coating on a support at least the surface of which is water-impervious and electrically insulating, a non-crystalline layer comprising a photosensitive compound which on exposure to light forms a product which can release mercury and/ or silver from mercurous and/or silver compounds, a wetting agent and a compound which inhibits crystallization. This material may be imagewise exposed through the support which is transparent, treated with a soluble containing mercorous and/or silver salts to produce a latent mercury and/or silver image and then physically developing this image by using a solution containing a metal salt to produce the appropriate metal image. Alternatively, a mercury or silver image may be produced on development which is then electro-plated to give the desired copper, nickel or cobalt image. The specified photo-sensitive compounds are aromatic diazosulphonates and anthraquinone disulphonic acids. Specified crystallation inhibitors are dextrin, sorbitol, calcium lactate and lactic acid or the wetting agent. The surface of the paper or polymeric support may be rendered water-impervious necessary by coating it with wax, a cresol-formaldehyde resin or a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer before applying the light-sensitive solution. The support may be treated on both sides in this way and lightsensitive layers applied to both sides of waterimpermeable support so that a printed wiring pattern may be obtained on both sides of the support.
