Abstract

1,092,560. Waveguide seals; discharge tubes. THOMSON-VARIAN. Aug. 20, 1965 [Sept. 5, 1964], No. 35868/65. Headings H1D and H1W. An output window between a microwave tube and a pressurized waveguide comprises a section of rectangular waveguide divided by a septum 33 perpendicular to the electric field, each subdivision of the guide containing a seal in the form of a block 21 of dielectric (e.g. alumina) which constitutes a half-wave resonator within the pass band of the tube. By choosing suitable dimensions for the length of the guides 31, 32 and their cross-section in the vicinity of the seals, the pass-band may be arranged between the parasitic resonances of the blocks in the transmission modes TE 30 and TE 40 . Thus, the distance between the blocks is chosen to slightly less than # 0 /4 where # 0 is measured at the principal resonance frequency of the blocks. Further, the length of the waveguides is made equal to the axial length of one of the blocks plus # 0 /2. In the embodiment shown each block 21, 22 is sealed within a rectangular copper tube and the tubes are located between the septum 33 and a block 20 of copper 20. The block 20 contains openings 51, 52 which each extend half way around the block and communicate with wide lateral grooves in the septum. The grooves communicate through passages 34. A cooling medium is introduced and removed through openings 54, 55.
