Abstract
Ammonia is decomposed into nitrogen and hydrogen within a coiled catalyst-containing chamber 20 disposed within a thermally insulated chamber 10, the catalyst chamber being heated by the combustion of a combustible gas (e.g. ammonia) and air within a centrally disposed chamber 22 and the ammonia for decomposition being preheated in a heat exchanger 19 formed in an annular compartment within the insulated chamber. The initial ignition of the fuel and air mixture is effected electrically by leads 27, 28, the products of combustions flowing downwardly over coil 20 before removal at 30. The heat exchanger comprises a pair of helical passageways formed by a single helical tubular coil 35 having an open pitch, the ammonia entering at 31 and being heated in passing along the passageway and thence through conduit 33, while the hot dissociated gases emerging from coil 20 are cooled in the second passageway before withdrawal at 37.
