Abstract

1,092,235. Making electrical components. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION . Feb. 22, 1966 [April 8, 1965], No. 7653/66. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions B4-B5] An insulating electrical connector for a number of parallel conductors is made by positioning the conductors 32 above a mould cavity 12, pressing the conductors downwardly by a die punch 26 to contact the bottom of the cavity, and injecting through a pipe 18 plastics insulating material which sets to form the connector (58) (Fig. 4, not shown). The conductors 32 are initially positioned by winding a length of wire in serpentine fashion around a number of spaced pins 22 on each side of the cavity, the wire being subsequently trimmed to produce a number of separate conductors. Each conductor is exposed at the lower surface of the finished connector and is of flattened crosssection due to the pressure exerted by the die punch 26. The die 26, which is integral with or slidable within a support 14, can be retracted before the plastics material is moulded in order to modify the shape of the connector (58). The connector can be employed in a computer magnetic core plane or in a printed circuit. Flash between the projecting wires can be sand-blasted or can be presented by upward projections around the edge of the cavity (12).
