Abstract

A polyamide is produced by condensing at 180-270 DEG C. (a) 9,9-bis (aminopropyl) fluorene with (b) dicarboxylic acid or amide-forming derivative thereof prepared by dimerization of a fatty acid or by carboxylation of an olefinic double bond in a fatty acid. The fatty acid which is dimerized may be linear or branched and saturated or mono- or poly-olefinically or acetylenically unsaturated and may be hydrogenated before or after polymerization. Acids specified include oleic and linoleic. The polymerized acid mixture may contain 0-15% monomer, 55-100% dimer and 0-35% of trimer and higher polymers. Fatty acids for carboxylation may have 10-23 carbon atoms, e.g. oleic. Carboxylation may be by treatment with CO/H2O under pressure and in the presence of a metal carbonyl or H2SO4 as catalyst. Amide-forming derivatives of the dicarboxylic acids may be amides, methyl or ethyl esters, anhydrides and chlorides. The products may be used for films, binders in printing paste, adhesive and coatings.
