Abstract

1,216,230. Polyamides from polymerized fatty acids. GENERAL MILLS Inc. 31 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 26336/68. Heading C3R. A polyamide is prepared from (a) a polymerized fatty acid having a dinner content above 85% by weight or an amide-forming derivative of such an acid and (b) a trimethyhexamethylene diame, the numbers of carboxyl, and amino, groups in the reaction mixture being equal. The fatty acid may be tall oil fatty acid or a mixture of oleic and linoleic acids. Amide-forming derivatives specified are anhydrides, chlorides and C 1-8 alkyl ester. The polymer may contain trimmer and monomer in a ratio between 0À3 and 10 to 1. It may be prepared by distillation of commercially available polymerization products. The diamine may be a mixture of the 2,2,4- at 2,4,4-isomers. The reaction mixture may also contain a diamine of formula NH 2 RNH 2 where R is a C 2-40 aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, for example a diamine prepared from a dimerized fatty acid having a C 34 hydrocarbon radical by reaction with ammonia to produce the nitrite and hydrogenation of this. The reaction mixture may also contain an acid derivative of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-20 aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical and R 1 is H or C 1-8 alkyl, e.g. sebacic acid, azelaic acid, adipic acid, terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid; an amino acid of formula NH 2 (CH 2 ) x COOH. where x is 2-15 or a lactan thereof or an alkanolamine of formula NH 2 R<SP>11</SP>OH where R<SP>11</SP> is a C 2-8 hydrocarbon radical. The polymerized fatty acid may provide 25% or more of the carbonyl groups in the mixture and the trimethyl-hexamethylene diamine 50% or more of the amino groups. The reaction may be at 100-300‹ C. in an aqueous medium.
