Abstract

1,091,281. Vehicle wheels; endless-tracks. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 8, 1964 [June 19, 1963], No. 24306/63. Headings B7C and B7H. A vehicle wheel or endless-track comprises separately-inflatable annular ground-contacting elements spaced around the outer peripheral surface of an endless inextensible supporting element with their axes normal to that surface. In one embodiment tubed or tubeless pneumatic tyres 4 detachably secured by elements 12 around a wheel rim 2 each have one sidewall 7 adjacent the rim, the other sidewall being extended to form a tread surface 10. The elements 12 may be annular and aligned with holes 14 in the rim to allow self-clearing of earth accumulated therein, or closed at their radially outer faces by discs (15) (Fig. 3, not shown) to serve as a temporary tread in the event of a puncture. In a second embodiment (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) an endless-track comprises pneumatic tyres similarly attached to rigid slats (21) hinged together by links (21a): In other embodiments illustrated but not claimed, the inflatable elements each have a triangular, square, rectangular or polygonal ground-contacting surface.
