Abstract

Acylated derivatives of 3a -hydroxy-7,12-diketocholanic acid, having the general formula <FORM:1091252/C2/1> wherein Y is an aliphatic acyl radical and X is H, Na, K, Mg or C1-C4 alkyl, are prepared either by acylating 3a -hydroxy-7,12-diketocholanic acid or its C1-C4 alkyl ester with an acylating derivative of a mono- or dicarboxylic acid in the presence of a tertiary base, or by oxidizing the 3a -acylated derivatives of cholic acid, or C1 to C4 alkyl esters thereof, with chromium trioxide. The compounds are used in pharmaceutical compositions (see Divisions A5-A6).ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having choleretic properties comprise an acylated derivative of 3 a -hydroxy-7,12-diketocholanic acid, of the general formula: <FORM:1091252/A5-A6/1> wherein Y is an aliphatic acyl radical, and X is hydrogen, potassium, sodium, magnesium or C1 to C4 alkyl, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable axcipient or carrier. The acyl group may be succinyl, formyl, or acetyl. The compositions may take the form of tablets, dragees, suppositories, granules or amopules, and may be administered orally, intravenously or intraduodenally. Examples are given for the preparation of the active substances (see Division C2).
