Abstract
1,091,204. Discharge apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 19, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963; June 5, 1964], Nos. 46946/63 and 23526/64. Heading H1X. An electric supply is switched by an arrangement which includes a sandwich, of a metal layer between two insulating layers, clamped between a pair of main electrodes, switching being initiated by producing a discharge between one of the main electrodes and the metal layer via an aperture in the interposed insulating layer, whereby the second insulating layer, which of itself is able to hold off the maximum voltage to be supplied across the switch, is ruptured to complete an electric path for the supply. A 40 kilovolt supply across terminals 9 and 10 and electrodes 1 and 2, between which a sandwich of polystyrene 3, copper or aluminium foil 4, and polythene 6 is clamped, is switched by closing the high speed electronic switch 11, to discharge the capacitor 12 across the electrode 1 and layer 4 via a circular aperture 7 in layer 5, whereby the layer 4 is vaporized and layer 6 ruptured, so that a current path is completed between electrodes 1 and 2. After switching, a fresh portion of the sandwich 3, which is in the form of a belt, is drawn between the electrodes, which may be protected by expendable copper foils, and one of which has vent holes. The supply may, alternatively, be connected between the foil 4 and the electrode 2.
