Abstract

A reinforced film is made by forming a dilute cellulosic fibre suspension and depositing the fibres in the form of a continuous web while incorporating an alkaline-curing synthetic resin impregnating the web with a caustic cellulose solution (the web having a density prior to impregnation of at least 0.15g/cc), regenerating the cellulose impregnating the web then drying the web. The resin may be a polyethylene imine or a reaction product of epichlorohydrin and a polyamide containing secondary amine groups and may be present in an amount up to 10% wt. of the solids in the furnish. The resin can be added to the furnish or the wet web. The resin-containing web can be wet-pressed and dried before impregnation. The fibres can be of Muss textilis, e.g. hemp, from which lignin, gums and waxes have been removed.
