Abstract

1,090,888. Polishing. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 2, 1966 [Nov. 17, 1965], No. 48950/65. Heading B3D. A process for polishing concave mirrors or reflectors comprises using the mirror or reflector as a container for granular material and rotating and/or vibrating the mirror or reflector so that the granular material acts on the surface thereof. The mirror is initially formed from a sheet 1, Fig. 1, of aluminium which is clamped between members 2a, 2b and stretched over a former 6, the members forming an annular ring 4, Fig. 2, on the mirror. A pair of mirrors are then joined face-to-face with a gasket 10, Fig. 4, between the rings and the space 12 between the mirrors is half-filled with ceramic chippings, cutting compound and water 11. The assembly is rotated about an inclined axis so that a matt surface is formed on the mirrors, a pressure relief valve 10a being provided. After separation, the mirrors are cleaned and degreased which smooths the surface further. The mirror 1a, Fig. 6, is then mounted on a platform 16 which is supported on leaf-springs 15 and reciprocated by an adjustable link 18 driven by an eccentric 19 from an electric motor 17. The platform 16 also carries an electric motor which slowly rotates the mirror as it is reciprocated. The surface of the mirror is treated as it is reciprocated and rotated by coarse coconut granules or hard wood sawdust impregnated with wax and may be further finished by finer coconut granules. A paddle or Archimedean screw may be inserted into the granules to prevent them sticking to the surface of the mirror. A final polishing may be effected by using a small pad of granules with the mirror tilted at an angle of 22¢ degrees. A plastic strippable coat is sprayed on to the mirror and the rim turned off. Finally, the mirror is anodized by immersion in a bath of tri-sodium phosphate and other chemicals, a current of 300 amps. being supplied to the mirror through aluminium studs 7 welded to the back of the mirror.
