Abstract

A poly-1,3-dioxolane having a molecular structure comprising recurring units of the general formula <FORM:1090863/C3/1> wherein R is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, olefinic, araliphatic or aromatic radical and n is not less than 1000 is obtained by reacting a polyhydroxymethylene macromolecular compound having a molecular structure comprising recurring units of the general formula <FORM:1090863/C3/2> wherein n is not less than 1000, with an aldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst and an inert solvent. Preferably the polyhydroxy methylene macromolecular compound is obtained by the saponification of a vinylene carbonate homo- or copolymer.
