Abstract
Polymeric addition products are obtained by reaction of at least one pyran aldehyde of the general formula <FORM:1092103/C3/1> wherein R and R1 represent hydrogen, a hydrocarbon radical or halogen with at least one compound containing an activated methylene group (defined) and polymerization through the double bond. The formation of the addition product and the polymerization may be carried out as a single step or alternatively the addition product may be formed first and subsequently polymerized. Suitable polymerization catalysts are those known for vinyl ethers and include both acidic and non-acidic catalysts. Suitable catalysts for the formation of the addition product are acids or bases. Foamed cellular products are obtained by carrying out the polymerization in presence of a foaming agent, e.g. a halogenated hydrocarbon. Surfactants, e.g. polysiloxane polyoxy alkylene block copolymers may also be incorporated. Examples relate to (1) a two-stage process comprising reacting acrolein dimer with cyclohexanone and subsequently polymerizing in the presence of a foaming agent and (2) a one-step process using the above ingredients.
