Abstract

An improvement in the process for the preparation of glass fibre-elastomeric products comprises applying a coating on to the glass fibre surfaces before their combination with the elastomeric material, the coating being deposited from a composition of a solvent and dispersed and/or dissolved solids comprising solubilized neoprene, powdered magnesium oxide, powdered zinc oxide and carbon black. The coating may also include as an anchoring agent an organo-silicon atom of the organo-silicon compound or the carboxylato group co-ordinated with the chromium atom of the Werner complex compound contains either an amino group or an epoxy group. The neoprene rubber may be milled, the solvent may be toluene, and the anchoring agent gammaaminopropyltriethoxy-silane. The glass fibres may be individually coated or may be impregnated as a bundle.ALSO:Glass fibre surfaces are coated by deposition from a composition comprising a solvent and dispersed and/or dissolved solids comprising solubilised neoprene, powdered magnesium oxide powdered zinc oxide and carbon black. The composition may be applied as a coating to individual glass fibres or by impregnating a bundle formed from a plurality of glass fibres. The term glass p fibres embraces continuous fibres, to their strands, to yarns and cords formed therefrom as well as to woven and non-woven fabrics therefrom, to discontinuous fibres to yarns therefrom and to woven and non-woven fabrics therefrom, and to mixtures of such continuous and discontinuous fibres in all forms. The composition may additionally contain as an anchoring agent an organo-silicon compound or a Werner complex compound wherein the organic group attached to the silicon atom of the organo-silicon compound or the carboxylato group coordinated with the chromium atom of the Werner complex compound contain either an amino group or an epoxy group. The glass fibres may have a size coating applied thereto before the above composition. Fine glass filaments are sized with a sizing composition containing gamma-amino propyltriethoxy silane as they are gathered together to form a strand. These strands are either air or heat dried and then plied with other strands and twisted into yarns, threads or cords which are used as a reinforcement for elastomers with or without cutting to shorter lengths and which can be formed into woven or non-woven fabrics for combination with elastomeric materials. The products may then be treated by impregnation with a composition comprising a solvent and dispersed and/or dissolved solids comprising solubilised neoprene, powdered magnesium oxide, powdered zinc oxide and carbon black.
