Abstract

1,090,806. Screwdrivers. RUSSELL AUTOFEED SCREWDRIVERS Ltd. May 11, 1966 [March 5, 1965], No. 9367/65. Heading B3N. A screwdriver which may form one of the stations of an assembling machine, comprises a body 10, Fig. 2, a sleeve 14 slidable in the body, a screwdriving spindle 16 driven by an electric motor or air turbine 17, through a clutch 18, a screw-receiving part 12 slidable in sleeve 14 against a spindle 33, a gating mechanism 37 for controlling the supply of screws from a magazine, and means above motor 17 for axially feeding the complete unit 15, or the spindle 16, relative to sleeve 14. The feed means comprises a pneumatic piston 19, Fig. 1, whose rod 20, Fig. 2, carries an abutment 23, which is used against a block 22 by a spring 24, located between a plate 26, carried by the piston-rod, and the block, which is connected to sleeve 14. Screw-receiving part 12 comprises a fixed member 42 having bores 45, 46, and a movable part 47 which is pivoted at 52, Fig. 3, so that the bore 49 of part 47 can be moved into alignment with either bore 45 or 46, the part being normally spring-urged so as to align bore 49 with bore 46. A pin 54 on part 47 co-operates with a fixed rod 55, Fig. 4, to pivot part 47. A lever 57 on the magazine is actuated so as to release a screw at the required time, by a Bowden wire 56 connected to a lever 58, operated by a trip-block 60, carried by block 22. Part 47 has a pair of screw-holding spring- loaded fingers 61 screwed thereon. In operation, sleeve 14 and head 12 are moved together by piston 19 until the head engages the workpiece. The sleeve along with spindle 16 moves relative to head 12, and motor 17 rotates the spindle, and drives a screw. Forward and reverse movements of unit 15 are controlled by two microswitches 65, 66 actuated by a member 67, Fig. 4. Lever 58 is actuated so as to operate the gating mechanism 37 immediately after a screw has been driven home, and bore 47 of movable part 47 is aligned with bore 45 of fixed member 42, by rod 54 when the unit is fully retracted.
