Abstract

1,090,551. Gas analysis. P. A. SMITH (National Distillers and Chemical Corporation). June 30, 1965, No.27782/65. Headings G1B and G1N. Organic contaminating vapours e.g. gasoline are detected in open ended containers such as milk bottles by drawing a sample of the atmosphere inside a bottle (not shown) through a tube 11 to a detector cell 10 of the hydrogen flame ionization type. The bottles pass along a conveyer and a pneumatic control system is provided to stop the bottles in succession, to insert and withdraw the tube 11 from each bottle and then to release the bottles to pass further along the conveyer. The tube 11 opens into the cell 10 and air is continually drawn through the cell by a pump (not shown). The cell is provided with an electrically conductive tube 55 having an orifice 57 at which a small hydrogen flame continually burns. An igniter coil 63 and thermocouple 65 are provided to ignite the flame and sense its presence respectively. An electrically conductive ring 58 is provided in the cell 10 above the hydrogen flame, and a polarizing potential is maintained between the ring 58 and pipe 55. If organic vapours from a contaminated bottle enter the cell. The carbon atoms from organic substances give rise to ions which migrate between the electrodes formed by the pipe 55 and ring 58 giving rise to small electrical current which is fed to an amplifier and which may subsequently be used to control relays in a bottle rejection mechanism.
