Abstract

1,173,441. Gas analysis; Electro-physical measurement. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP. May 19, 1967 [June 6, 1966; July 20, 1966; July 25, 1966(3)], No.23344/67. Addition to 1,090,551. Headings G1B and G1N. In an apparatus for inspecting open end plastics containers e.g. bottles or jars, for the presence of organic contaminants therein, of the type disclosed in Specification 1,090,551 in which the containers pass in single file along a conveyer and in which samples of gas from each container are serially taken and fed to a gas analyzer, a flame ionization cell is used for detecting the contaminants and a positive indication is used to actuate a container puncturing member in the form of a tubular tool with an oblique cutting edge. The flame ionization cell is shown in Fig.8 and comprises assembled metal sections enclosing a quartz burner tip 124 to which hydrogen gas is supplied via tubing 110 and a molecular sieve 107, the flow being controlled by a needle valve 118. The pressure of the hydrogen flame is monitored by a thermocouple 136 and a cylindrical collector electrode 135 is provided surrounding the flame on the tip 124. The gas samples to be analyzed are fed via a line 105 to the base of the flame on the tip 24, and any hydrocarbons in the sample will change the ionization of the flame when burned, this change being detected at the collector anode 135 and registered by suitable electrical readout means e.g. a voltmeter. Control circuitry for the apparatus is described and this includes a circuit for the electro-meter which is self-balancing in the sense that automatic compensation is made for aging of the circuit components. The voltmeter needle is arranged to move between two limit contacts, a fall in the registered voltage below the lower limit due to circuit unbalance being corrected by a motor driven potentiometer connected to the contacts, being used to restore the desired voltage. A rise in the registered voltage is compensated in the same way except that when a contaminant is detected further relay contacts are opened for a period of five seconds to prevent the motor drive to the potentiometer being energized until the contaminant has cleared the detection cell. The analyzer is shut-down if the registered voltage does not fall between the desired limits and cannot be compensated or if the thermocouple 136 detects the extinction of the hydrogen flame. Heaters 138 are provided in the body of the flame ionization cell to prevent condensation of water vapour therein.
