Abstract

1,090,444. Electrostatic precipitators. W. KAUFMANN. Feb. 1, 1966 [Feb. 3, 1965], No. 4363/66. Addition to 985720. Heading B2J. The electrostatic precipitator of the parent Specification is modified in that the discharge electrodes have a plurality of lateral projections, the height and spacing of which are so related to the diameter of the opening in, and the length of, the ring-shaped cleaning elements that the cleaning elements oscillate as they slide along the discharge electrodes thereby improving the cleaning effect. In Figs. 1 and 2 the discharge electrode 1 is in the form of a corrugated wire, the depth and the pitch of the corrugations being so related to the length and to the diameter of the opening of the cleaning element 2 that oscillation of the element takes place, the element thereby impinging on the electrode and causing it to vibrate. More than one ring - shaped cleaning element may be used per electrode. In a modification, the discharge electrode is helical in construction and may be made to vibrate. The central opening of the cleaning element in this case may be eccentric or non- circular in construction. In a further modification, the cleaning element consists of two wire rings held at an axial distance from each other. Instead of the lateral projections being formed by the corrugated or helical shape of the electrode, the latter may be constructed as a barbed wire or may consist of a strip of sheet metal folded like a bellows and partly extended or in which folds or pockets are made as by stamping.
