Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate, suitable for the manufacture of high strength yarns, is made by effecting an ester-interchange reaction between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in the presence of 0.3-1.5 gms. of calcium acetate and 0.2-0.7 gms. of triphenyl phosphite per kg. of dimethyl terephthalate and then polycondensing the product (e.g. in the presence of antimony trioxide).
