Abstract

1,090,181. Screw conveyer. GASCOIGNES (READING) Ltd. June 12, 1964 [June 17, 1963; Sept. 10, 1963], Nos. 24079/63 and 35743/63. Heading B8A. [Also in Division F1] A screw conveyer for dry flowable materials such as grain, and slurries such as effluent from pig and cattle yards, has a worm 5, Fig. 1, arranged in a casing 4 of U-shaped, square (Fig. 3, not shown), or preferably hexagonal crosssection. The top three sides of the hexagonal casing form a removable or pivotally-openable cover 7 secured to side braces 16 extending the whole length of the casing 4. The casing 4, provided with an outlet 24, is pivotally mounted at 6, on a stand 1 at an angle adjustable by a chain 23 or the like connected to a steel tube 22. The casing may be mounted on a wheeled frame for transportation. The casing braces may be received and clamped along any part of their length in slots in vertical supports (15), Fig. 2 (not shown), connected by a bar (14) passing through a sleeve (13) fixed to a pedestal bearing (12). This arrangement permits sideways and vertical swinging of the casing relative to the stand (1). The stand is provided with tractor connection means (25). The worm shaft 8 may be journalled in a bearing at each of its ends or at its upper end only in a bearing 9 which is pivotable vertically to permit the worm 5, when inoperative, to rest on the casing 4. The lower part of the easing and worm may be removable to facilitate transportation, cleaning and maintenance. The power take-off shaft of a tractor may drive the worm 5 through a shaft 20, gear-box 19, shaft 21 and a transmission in a housing 10 carried by the side braces 16. In addition to the means for driving the worm by a tractor, the conveyer may carry an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic drive or a diesel engine for driving the worm, a clutch being provided to select the required power source. The pitch and diameter of the worm and the distance across flats of the hexagonal casing may be 6, 9 and 9À25 inches respectively. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the lower end of the worm shaft is connected through a gear-box (30) or ball joints or other means to one or more subsidiary worms 32, 33 feeding the main pit and extending perpendicular to the main worm. The connecting gear-box may contain remotely controlled clutches permitting a desired selection of worms to be driven by a single power source. The subsidiary worms may be independently driven.
