Abstract

7 - [2 - Hydroxy - 3 - (N1 - hydroxypropylpiperazino) - propyl] - theophylline and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, particularly the nicotinic acid addition salt, thereof and preparation thereof by reacting 1-(b -hydroxypropyl)-piperazine either: (a) with 7-(2,3-epoxypropyl)-theophylline in ethanol or (b) with epichlorhydrin and subsequently with theophylline in iso-propanol in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide, and then, in either case, reacting the above-named compound, which results, with nicotinic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for enteral, parenteral and rectal administration, which comprise 7-[2-hydroxy-3-(N1-2-hydroxy-propylpiperazino propyl] - theophylline preferably as the nicotinate in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, have vasodilatory, bronchodilatory, respiratory, analeptic, diuretic, spasmolytic and clarifying activity.
