Abstract

1,089,893. Control systems for consumption apparatus. DANFOSS A.S. Jan. 20, 1965 [Jan. 21, 1964], No. 2519/65. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H3] A switching circuit for controlling current through a load, comprises at least two junctionless non-rectifying semi-conductor switches 3, 4 in series and a means 5 for applying a control voltage above the threshold valve across a part only of the series connection so as to effect switching of the corresponding switch 3 or switches from a high to a low resistance condition. The control voltage applied from 5 causes switch 3 to switch on so that the supply voltage 1 which is not large enough by itself to switch on all of switches; is now applied across the remainder of the solid state switches e.g. 4 to switch them on. The switches then remain on until the current in the circuit is reduced below their holding value. The control voltage may be from a trigger generator in the form of impulses, square and sine waves and direct voltages. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the two solid state switches are connected via a load (8) to a D.C. source (7) and a variable potential divider (11, 12) enables the. D.C. source voltage (U G ) to be applied across either of the switches. (9 or 10) so as to switch one on before the other. The variable arm (11) of the potential divider may be positive or negative temperature coefficient resistor, a photo resistor, a pressure-sensitive resistor, variable resistor or a switch. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), both arms of the potential divider may be variable and the solid state switches are mounted on a metal plate which electrically joins them together to form a single unit. The solid state switches consist of predominantly tellurium with additions of elements from Groups IV and V of the Periodic Table. The loads 2 may be capacitive or inductive and the control voltage 5 may be provided from a phase shifter which only allows the switches to conduct during certain parts of the A.C. cycle of the supply 1 so controlling the current through the load.
