A method of controlling the operation of a rolling mill comprises deriving a formula E = E o (#<SP>m</SP> -1), from a curve representing the horse power requirements of the motors of the mill; where # is the percentage elongation of a rolled workpiece, E is the total power consumption per unit weight of the rolled material to produce an elongation of #, E 0 is a constant related to the deformation resistance of the workpiece, and m is a constant related to the kind or desired thickness of the rolled material; and determining from the formula the temperature for a soaking-pit of the mill, the rolling speed, and roll gap for each stand of the mill. The control is conveniently performed automatically by a computer which is fed with appropriate parameters and solves a number of derived equations.
