Abstract
A refractory composition for metal-forming dies comprises 96.5-97.2% ZrO2 and 2.8-3.5% MgO. The ZrO2 and MgO or Mg salt, e.g. MgF2 or MgCO3, which yields MgO on heating, all of particle size less than 325 mesa, e.g. 10m , may be milled together with water and organic binders, e.g. dextrin, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and wax, dried to a moisture content of 1-6%, compacted to form the die, dried, fired at 2500-3500 DEG F. and cooled at 100-200 DEG F./hr. to give a maximum amount of monoclinic and tetragonal phases. This amount may be increased by repeated heating and cooling from 1500 DEG F. to room temperature.
