Abstract

Compositions especially suitable for use in the treatment of mastitis in animals comprise a therapeutic agent in a hydrophobic viscous or gel base and at least 10% by wt. of a solid, physiologically innocuous, non-gelling water-soluble compound of average particle size below 150m . The therapeutic agent is generally an antibiotic, e.g. a penicillin such as benzyl penicillin or procaine penicillin, or a streptomycin such as streptomycin or dihydrostreptomycin sulphate. The base may be a mineral oil or vegetable oil. An aluminium soap, e.g. aluminium monostearate, may be added to the base as a gelling agent and beeswax may be added as a thickening agent. Specified solid non-gelling water-soluble compounds are sodiumchloride, calcium lactate, and sugars, e.g. sucrose, lactose, and dextrose. A sulphonamide, e.g. sulphadimidine, may also be included within the compositions containing an antibiotic.
