Abstract

Substrates having a film-like coating are produced by contacting the substrate with a solvent composition at a temperature above ambient temperature and up to the boiling point of the solvent composition, which composition comprises a thermoplastic resin dissolved in a solvent comprising a chlorinated hydrocarbon and/or a chlorofluorinated hydrocarbon which boils at 50 DEG C or less. A hard durable film like coating may be produced by adding a thermosetting resin to the composition and baking the treated substrate at between 100 and 200 DEG C. The process may occur at temperature of from 5 DEG C below the boiling point of the solvent composition up to the boiling point of the solvent composition. The solvent may be methylene chloride, 1,2,2-trichloro-1,1,2-trifluoro-ethane, chlorinated hydrocarbons or a mixture of a chlorinated hydrocarbon and a chlorofluorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. a mixture containing 52% by weight of 1,2,2-trichloro-1,1,2-trifluorethane and 48% by weight methylene chloride or of methylene chloride and methyl, ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. A plasticiser may be incorporated in the thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, and a pigment or dyestuff may be incorporated in the composition. Thermoplastic materials specified are bitumen, rosin, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, modified glycerol-phthalic acid resin, polyacrylates and polymethacrylates, and a copolymer of butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. The thermosetting resin may be the condensation product of formaldehyde with urea, melamine or benzo guanidine which may be obtained by reacting a proportion of the methylol groups in a urea-or melamine-formaldehyde with an alcohol such as butyl alcohol. The composition may be applied by hot-dipping or spraying and may be applied to electric light fittings, refrigerators and motor vehicles, laminated articles, plastics, e.g. polypropylene, wood, metal panels.
