Abstract

A curing catalyst for an alkylated aminoplast is the mono-salt of maleic acid with triethylamine. The preferred aminoplasts are from urea or an aminotriazine, e.g. melamine or acetoguanamine and they are preferably alkylated with an alcohol having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. a butyl alcohol, 2-ethylbutanol, n-hexanol or cyclohexyl alcohol. The aminoplast may be mixed with an alkyd, especially a long-oil alkyd. The salt may be formed in a solution in isopropyl or n-butyl alcohol and may be used as such. The compositions may include other solvents, e.g. ethyl acetate, ethoxy- or butoxy-ethyl acetate, acetone, butanone, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, nitroparaffins, acetonitrile, aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons. The compositions may also include fillers, pigments, extenders or delustrants. Examples describe the following compositions:-(1) and (4) A composition containing Ti O2, an oil modified alkyd from phthalic anhydride glycerol and coconut oil acids, a butylated urea-formaldehyde condensate, xylol, butanol, and the maleic acid mono-salt of triethylamine is coated on steel panels, dried and cured. Results are compared with those obtained using the same composition but with other acid catalysts. Example 2 is similar using a butylated melamine-formaldehyde condensate while Example 3 uses a butylated acetoguanamine-formaldehyde condensate. Examples (5) and (6) use an iso-propyl alcohol solution of the monomaleate of triethylamine to cure a film made from a solution of n-butylated urea-formaldehyde condensate in xylol/butanol.
