Abstract

Goods containing keratinous fibres are shrinkproofed by treating them in an aqueous bath containing hydrogen peroxide and an acid or the corresponding anhydride (when such anhydride exists), the acid being a monocarboxylic acid having the formula R-COOH in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms, a dicarboxylic acid having the formula HOOC-R1-COOH in which R1 is a direct bond, a vinylene group or an alkylene group having 2-10 carbon atoms or an aromatic dicarboxylic acid having the formula Ar-(COOH)2 in which Ar is an aromatic group having 6-12 carbon atoms and then treating them in a second aqueous bath containing a bisulphite or metabisulphite. The keratinous fibres may be wool or goat or camel hair and may be in the form of raw fibre, yarn, woven or knitted fabric or textiles, e.g. sweaters or hosiery. The goods may first be washed in an aqueous medium containing soap, ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate at 80 DEG -140 DEG F for 5-45 minutes at a bath-to-goods ratio of 20:1, rinsed and optionally dried. They may then be placed in an aqueous solution containing 0.1-1.5% by weight of hydrogen peroxide, a small amount of an ammonium base, e.g. ammonium hydroxide, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine or pyridine and 0.1-0.3% by weight of a non-ionic wetting agent, e.g. an alkyl aryl polyether alcohol. The acid or anhydride, e.g. acetic anhydride or formic or oxalic acid or maleic, phthalic, isophthalic or sebacic acid or their anhydrides, may then be added in 2 to 6 approximately equal proportions at intervals ranging from 3-8 minutes while agitating the bath. The goods may then be rinsed for 30-60 minutes, optionally dried and then treated in the aqueous bath containing 0.2-2% by weight of the bisulphite or metabisulphite, e.g. sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium, caesium, calcium or barium bisulphite or sodium metabisulphite, with agitation for 25-35 minutes at 80 DEG -140 DEG F, rinsed and dried. In Example II hosiery containing 90% by weight of wool and 10% by weight of nylon is treated.
