Abstract

1,089,387. Independent suspension. DAIMLER BENZ A.G. April 28, 1966 [April 28, 1965], No. 18665/66. Heading B7D. In an independent suspension for a motor vehicle comprising a pair of wheels 10, 11 each mounted for spring pivotal movement both about a transverse axis A-A offset from the wheel axis and about a longitudinal axis B-B, movement of the suspension assembly about the axis B-B is resisted by a rubber or metal torsion spring. Each wheel is mounted on an arm 16 journalled in a tubular cross member 15 secured to a tubular longitudinal member 14 rotatable in bearing members 11, 12 on the vehicle body. As shown one bearing member 11 contains an annular rubber torsion spring 17 which resists movement of the longitudinal member 14 about the axis B-B. A spring 18 consisting of a single rhomboidal leaf connected to the member 14 either rigidly or so as to pivot about the axis B-B resists movement of the arms 16 about the axis A-A, and shock absorbers 33 are connected between the arms 16 and the vehicle body. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a torsion bar connected to one end of the longitudinal member 14 extends through the member along the axis B-B for connection to the vehicle body, and the arms 16 are sprung by rubber springs in the cross member 15. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) two torsion bars anchored within the longitudinal member 14 extend in opposite directions to the ends thereof for connection to the body, and the arms 16 are sprung by torsion bars which are housed in a second tubular cross member on the member 14 and twisted by arms linked to the free ends of the arms 16. The longitudinal member may be resiliently mounted in the transverse direction.
