Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In web-roll changing apparatus, each web-roll spindle is hydraulically braked, selectively, under the control of a dancer roller 29 operating on a throttle valve 28 in the hydraulic first circuit to the brakes. When a web-roll change takes place a second hydraulic control circuit is switched into the mains circuit to enable the new web-roll to be braked sufficiently to maintan a constant tension in the web. This second circuit contains a pump 39 non-return valve 40, pressure reservoir 44, shutoff valve 42 and an adjustable overflow valve 41 which controls the hydraulic pressure of the second circuit which is added to the first circuit during web-roll change. The pressure required in the second circuit is dependent on the width and diameter of the new web-roll, and the setting of the overflow valve 41 is adjusted accordingly. In Fig. 2, the valve 41 is attached to a slide 46 movable in guides 47 by an endless chain 48. A lever 51 and pointer 52 are attached to shaft of reversing wheel 50 of the chain 48. The position of the valve 41 can be adjusted by the lever 51, the pointer 52 indicating on the scale 53 the web tension according to web width. An adjusting piece 56 acting on the slide 54 of the valve 41 via a spring 55 is connected by an adjusting rod 57 to a sleeve 58. The sleeve 58 is movably mounted on a pivoted rod 59 carrying a cam-follower roller 60 which co-operates with a cam 61 attached to the shaft of the spider 4. The angular orientation of the cam 61 is governed by the diameter of the new web-roll 2 when moved to the splicing position, so that the adjusting piece 56 of the valve 41 is positioned in accordance with the new web-roll diameter.
