Abstract
1,088,922. Gas chromatography, electrical. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 26, 1965 [May 29, 1964], No.22360/65. Heading G1N. Relates to the determination, in a gas chromatograph apparatus, of the relationship between the output signal from a detector and the quantity of the gas component passing through the detector. A known quantity of a gas component is supplied to a vessel 1 through which an inert gas flows, is intimately mixed therewith by a stirrer 21 and leaves the vessel having a composition in which the concentration of the component in the inert gas, decreases exponentially with time. The signal output, from a flame ionization detector 5, 6, across a resistor R7, is amplified and compared with an exponentially varying, reference signal from an R. C. circuit, applied across a resistor R16, and a resulting difference signal, which should be zero if the R. C. circuit is properly adjusted, is applied to a display unit 10. In the said R. C. circuit a capacitor 11 is charged by a voltage source 12 when a D. P. switch 12 is closed. A variable resistor 17 is adjusted so that the initial signal from C11 through R15 to R16, is equal and opposite to the initial signal from the detector appearing across R16. The switch 13 is then opened and R14 is adjusted so that the difference signal appearing across R16 remains zero as a function of time. The flame ionization detector which has an electrode 6 and burner 5 connected to a 100 volt source 8, receives combustible gases from a passage 23 and the mixture of inert carrier gas with gas component from the vessel 1. Alternatively the detector may be a catharometer type or radio-active type.
