Abstract

1320954 Analyzing gases electrically ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 6 Oct 1970 [20 Oct 1969] 47459/70 Heading G1N In apparatus for measuring low concentrations of hydrogen-containing combustibles, including methane, in a gas stream, the gas stream is passed through a combustion chamber containing an electrical heating element of a noble metal having a variable voltage supply controlled by a timer to provide a predetermined temperative cycle in the combustion chamber so that all of the, or selected, hydrogen-containing combustibles are oxidized, the treated gas stream passing to a flame ionization detector which measures the hydrocarbon content, or to a coated Piezo-electric crystal detector which measures the water produced by combustion of the hydrogen-containing combustibles at each stage of the cycle. The combustion chamber is a quartz tube and the heating element is of platinum, palladium, or a platinum or palladium alloy. Where a Piezoelectric crystal detector is used the gas stream is dried before reaching the combustion chamber. The detector measurements are plotted on a penrecorder, the resulting traces indicating the amounts of methane, other hydrocarbon, and hydrogen in the gas stream, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). The coated Piezo-electric crystal detector may be as described in Specification 1061767 and 1255091.
