Abstract
1,088,898. Reactors. NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CO. Ltd., and A.E.I.-JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1966 [Nov. 19, 1965], No. 49365/65. Heading G6C. In a light water cooled, heavy water moderated nuclear reactor, the moderator and coolant pressures are maintained equal. The fuel tubes in the moderator calandria tank are not subjected to pressure and a minimum thickness of neutron absorbing material is employed. The tank is mounted within a concrete pressure vessel and immersed in light water coolant which is circulated by pumps mounted in the concrete wall. Steam is passed through a separator within the vessel and leaves through a Venturi which prevents an excessive steam loss, by the generation of sonic velocities, in the event of a fracture of the steam system. The equalization of the pressures of the moderator and coolant is effected by maintaining a vapour space above the moderator in the calandria tank. Alternatively, helium gas may be admitted to the calandria through valves controlled by the pressure difference across the calandria walls. Deuterium may be used instead of helium and pressure may be controlled by regulating the flow of heat from the fuel to the moderator by thermal insulation.
