Abstract

1,088,873. Measuring weight, electrically. WAYNE KERR LABORATORIES Ltd. and R. CALVERT. May 9, 1966 [Feb.8, 1965], No. 5410/65. Heading G1N. A weighing apparatus comprises a load platform supported resiliently at a plurality of points on capacitive load cells (Fig. 2) each connected in the feedback circuit of an A. C. energized amplifier, Fig. 5 (not shown) whereby the output voltage of each amplifier is directly proportional to the displacement of the electrodes of its associated capacitive load cell and hence to the load thereon, the voltage across a load cell being indirectly proportional to the electrode spacing. The amplifier output voltages are summed to provide a measure of the total load on the platform. Each load cell comprises a resilient proving ring 11 (Fig. 2) on a base 13 and having a domed top 14 on which the platform rests, a circular disc electrode 16 electrically and mechanically joined to the ring by a support 15, and conveniently at earth potential. Co-operating with electrode 16 is a circular disc electrode 17 surrounded by a guard ring or neutral electrode 18, electrodes 17, 18 being supported on a stationary coaxial connector having an inner conductor 19 connected to electrode 17 and an outer conductor 20 connected to the guard ring electrode 18. The connector is electrically connected by a coaxial cable 21 to the input of an associated amplifier. The electrodes 16, 17 are arranged so that they remain spaced apart under maximum deflection of the proving ring under load. Stops are provided (not shown) to prevent the electrodes contacting one another if the platform is overloaded. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown) the platform is supported at each corner on the top of a block (21) carried by a pair of leaf springs (22) (23), the undersurface of each block constituting a movable electrode of a capacitive transducer similar to that in Fig. 2. Spaced separated load carriers may be used, for example when measuring the weight of a wheeled vehicle.
