Abstract
1,088,741. Ultrasonic devices; ultrasonic testing. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. Jan. 1, 1965 [Jan. 3, 1964], No. 182/65. Headings H4D and H4J. A device for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic vibrations, and applicable to the detection of flaws and discontinuities in materials, comprises at least two parallel connected electromechanical transducers 1, 2 (e.g. piezoelectric crystals) having different resonant frequencies, an inductive element 7 in parallel with the transducers 1, 2, the element 7 together with the capacitances of the transducers 1, 2 forming at least part of a resonant system having a resonant frequency intermediate the resonant frequencies of the transducers 1, 2, and a source 3 of electrical energy. Source 3 is a pulse generator. The transducers 1, 2 are preferably cemented to a wedge 9 of polymethyl methacrylate. The circuit is arranged to resonate at a frequency between the resonant frequencies of the transducers 1, 2, adjustment being provided by element 7. A broad band output is thereby obtained. For example if the resonant frequencies of the elements 1 and 2 are 1À1 and 1À6 Mc/s. respectively the device provides a useful frequency range of 0À9 to 1À8 Mc/s., approximately, and Lamb waves may be used to scan articles of a thickness varying between 1À5 and 4À7 mm.
